Stricter 'ready for carriage' procedures

When delivering air cargo for export shipments, the freight agent has to comply with so-called ready for carriage procedures. These procedures say that every shipment delivered to a forwarder must be accompanied by an Air Waybill that states both the weight and the volume of the cargo. The forwarder, in this case Swissport, is required to verify the information on the Air Waybill. Recently, ready for carriage procedures have been tightened, making the need for efficient weighing and dimensioning of air cargo even more urgent.

Overloading airframes dangerous and expensive

Incorrect weights stated on Air Waybills are a major problem for Cargo handlers like Swissport Cargo. Customers are not invoiced for the proper weight and planning weight distribution and fuel consumption of cargo planes becomes troublesome. In order to solve this problem, Swissport Cargo installed RWV-C scale forks on their forklifts. At goods reception every pallet is identified, weighed, dimensioned and registered.

Incorrectly stated weight? Sender pays

Every shipment is weighed on the forklift truck during offloading at goods reception. The forklift driver scans the barcode on the Airway Bill and measures the volume of the shipment. Weight, volume and ID are transferred to Swissport’s WMS via wireless connection. If the difference between the weight stated on the Air Waybill and the real weight exceeds a certain value, a new Air Waybill is created and the customer is invoiced for the overweight.

The advantages that mobile weighing brings to Swissport:

  • Weighing procedures are far less labour intensive, making post-hoc invoicing of overweight shipments possible;
  • Efficient weighing of inbound cargo enables Swissport to comply with tightened Ready for Carriage procedures;
  • Swissport Cargo generates extra revenues on its cargo handling activities.

Shipping weights
Every company that ships goods needs to know the weight of these goods as accurately as possible. The sender is required by law to declare the correct weight on the shipping documents. Overloads and incorrect declaration can cause a lot of trouble. Determining shipping weights is probably the most common use of a hand pallet truck scale. It’s in the shipping department where time can be saved by weighing mobile. Middle and smaller sized companies seldom handle large numbers of pallets per day. However, efficient weighing in the shipping department offers other advantages as well. Shipping weights can be printed on a ticket, together with an order number and date and time.
