It’s the numbers that make the difference

Weighing and measuring in a single hub: the joint solution from RAVAS and Cargometer for automatic pallet measurement provides real-time shipping data for logistics automation and process optimisation at the cross-docking hub near Vienna.
In logistics, efficiency is arguably the decisive factor for profitability and speed: if just one step can be saved in the complex processes, this translates into significant savings given the volume of transactions. Transparent real-time data forms the basis for this.
A key factor for logistics planning and invoicing is the actual dimensions and weight of shipments. The more accurate this data is, the simpler the planning and the better the available loading capacity can be utilised. However, experience shows that extracting this data from freight documents is prone to inaccuracies. And weighing and measuring separately adds two extra steps.
Dynamic weighing and measuring whilst moving goods with a forklift truck
The logistics company Gebrüder Weiss operates a major cross-docking hub at its transhipment centre in Maria Lanzendorf, near Vienna. Most of the intralogistics here is carried out by forklift trucks. Separate weighing and measuring not only meant two extra work steps, but also an interruption to the flow of goods and thus a delay. A solution was therefore needed that would allow weighing and measuring to be carried out whilst the goods were being transported by forklift truck.
RAVAS and Cargometer jointly offered precisely such a solution: this consists of a forklift truck scale from RAVAS and a volume measurement system from Cargometer, which are mounted on the forklift truck. This allows the dimensions and weight of pallets to be recorded automatically during normal use of the forklift truck. No additional actions are required on the part of the operator. The automatically weighing electric pallet trucks and forklift trucks thus speed up processes in cross-docking logistics. However, the significant impact on efficiency stems from the automated processing of this data.
Real-time shipment data as the basis for logistics automation
The system installed on the industrial transport vehicle automatically combines weight and dimensions into a data package that is sent to the warehouse management system in real time. This real-time data helps to optimise route planning and truck scheduling, or to automate processes such as invoicing. Dynamic weighing and measuring also forms the basis for future AI-driven automated truck planning.
Has proven itself in everyday use more than a million times
The joint solution from RAVAS and Cargometer has been proving its performance and reliability for several years now in the demanding day-to-day reality of cross-docking logistics. The milestone of 1 million dynamically weighed and measured pallets has now been comfortably exceeded – saving over 1 million interruptions in the material flow and more than 2 million work steps.
In addition to these efficiency gains, the constant flow of shipment data in real time means that the Gebrüder Weiss site in Maria Lanzendorf is ideally positioned for data-driven logistics and automation in the age of artificial intelligence.
