The ability to perform measurements while driving, helps to optimize the cross-docking process. Logistical companies with cross docking processes are able to work faster, do not have to set up picking processes and have less stock. Shipments can be prepared faster, more frequently and without an unnecessarily long lead time by transporting them directly from incoming goods to the correct location at outgoing goods. It is therefore extra beneficial that these pallets no longer have to be taken to a separate, static scale.
With RAVAS mobile weighing technology, palletized goods are weighed during internal transport, so in the flow of the process and, in the case of DPD Poland, the correDiscover how DPDgroup Poland optimized its cross docking operations with RAVAS mobile weighing. Experience faster, more accurate shipments, and witness the power of innovation at work in the logistics industry.ct dimensions are also immediately determined and communicated to the WMS system together with the weight.
Increase in completed shipments
DPD Poland is part of DPDgroup, one of the largest international courier networks in Europe. The heart of the company's activities are 3 sorting plants. In addition, DPD Poland has 60 branches throughout the country and works with more than 8,000 couriers. Due to the rapid development of e-commerce, the company has registered a significant increase in the volume of shipments handled. In 2020, DPD Poland delivered 193.5 million parcels, representing an increase of more than 24% compared to the previous year.
Joanna Ślażyńska, Project Coordinator of the Sorting House at DPD Poland
"Thanks to the possibility to weigh while driving, synergy was created between the operational activities during transport that are carried out as standard. The solution was a perfect fit with our existing cross docking processes, and thanks to its simplicity, no lengthy training was required."
Complexity of services
DPD not only offers traditional parcel deliveries, but also develops and offers additional services, including deliveries to collection points and parcel machines, night deliveries and temperature-controlled food deliveries. The increasing complexity of the services requires careful consideration and continuous improvement of the processes. The company also places great value on the analysis of all market innovations, which can increase operational efficiency. One was streamlining and automating the processes for weighing and dimensioning shipments. Especially for this reason DPD has requested the consultation of RAVAS.
Main goal: cost savings
DPD Poland was one of the first companies in the industry to recognize that mobile weighing systems have great potential for cost reduction. ‘The ability to use this kind of solution is an absolute innovation in our industry. As a company open to new solutions, we wanted to be the first to try them out', says Joanna Ślażyńska, Project Coordinator of the Sorting House at DPD Poland.
Project scope
The initiative to introduce mobile weighing systems to DPD came from the supplier of forklift trucks and warehouse solutions, Toyota Material Handling Poland. 'We were invited to get to know the customer's needs and determine the optimal solution’, says Magdalena Futyma, Account Manager Poland at RAVAS. 'The meeting was attended by all parties involved in the project. DPD of course, but also the supplier of the trucks, the supplier of the pallet dimensioning system and RAVAS. During the conversations, we established the expectations of the customer. DPD was interested in equipping the LPE 200 pallet trucks with a weighing system and wireless data transfer to the central operating system. We familiarized the customer with the technical aspects of the scales and presented the possibilities of communication between the scale and the customer's operating system.
Perfect match
'It is precisely because of the operational reality of the courier company that we opted for the system of weighing and measuring pallets in motion. Thanks to the possibility to weigh while driving, synergy was created between the operational activities during transport that are carried out as standard. The solution was a perfect fit with our existing cross docking processes, and thanks to its simplicity, no lengthy training was required', emphasizes Joanna Ślażyńska.
Fast effects
DPD Poland has been using the RAVAS system for several months now and the first effects of the implementation were already visible in the first week. 'We are very satisfied with performance of the scales and the cooperation with RAVAS. We appreciate the ease of communication with our Account Manager and the efficiency of the service orders', summarizes Joanna Ślażyńska.
Magdalena Futyma concludes: 'RAVAS was involved in the project from the start, from advice to supervision of order processing and service. The ability to meet the customer, communicate the needs and verify with the IT department the capabilities and technical preferences gave us the opportunity to choose the most optimal solution.’
