Simply weigh instead of counting by hand

Designed to meet the demands of the retail sector: The RAVAS 5200 hand pallet truck, featuring an integrated scale and piece-counting function, makes tedious stock-taking efficient and simple.

Simply weigh instead of counting by hand: How weight-based piece-counting speeds up and improves the accuracy of stocktaking for a furniture retail chain

Regular checks of actual stock levels are essential for businesses. When it comes to items that can be counted quickly or small quantities, this involves little effort. However, when dealing with a large number of small items of low value, this regular stock-taking quickly becomes uneconomical due to the high effort involved. A furniture chain operating nine branches in Belgium also faced this problem.

Manual counting is tedious and unreliable

In all the company’s branches, customers can also buy small parts such as hinges or fixing materials for their furniture. To make this as convenient as possible, these small parts are kept loose in containers on the shop floor, where customers can simply pick out the right ones. To ensure that there are always enough of these parts available, the entire stock had to be recorded by hand once a week. This kept two staff members busy for an hour each – per item number. This manual counting was also not very accurate. And because manual counting is so time-consuming, some items were only counted every few weeks. This repeatedly led to discrepancies from the target stock levels and stock-outs.

“Inventory checks using a pallet truck and scales are exactly the solution we’ve been waiting for. It’s significantly more efficient and accurate than anything we had before,” says the furniture store manager, summarising the added value of the RAVAS 5200 in this application.

Simply weigh instead of tedious counting: the RAVAS 5200 hand pallet truck makes it possible

During a visit by a RAVAS sales representative to the manager of one of the furniture stores, this problem was discussed. RAVAS offered to simply try out whether the items could be weighed rather than counted using the RAVAS 5200 hand pallet truck with an integrated scale.

This pallet truck can transport and weigh loads of up to 2,000 kilograms. For loads up to 200 kilograms, the pallet truck weighs to an accuracy of 0.2 kilograms. Up to 10 tare values and 10 item numbers can be stored via the integrated touchscreen display. This means that the items that need to be recorded most frequently do not have to be re-entered every time. Item weights are displayed to up to four decimal places. This allows the pallet truck to also display the weighing results converted into quantities. Thanks to very intuitive user guidance, staff can use the pallet truck reliably even without extensive training.

Weighing makes weekly stock checks cost-effective

After a month of testing, those responsible decided to purchase the RAVAS 5200. This is because weighing reduced the working time per counting operation by 75%. With the hand pallet truck, a two-person team now manages an average of 11 stock checks per hour instead of just one – a 1,000% increase in productivity.

At the same time, stock-taking became more accurate and could be carried out more frequently – providing a much clearer overview of stock levels, sales, shrinkage and theft.
