These five steps will help you ensure the reliability of your measurements. For each step, you’ll find details of what you need to do yourself and when to carry out maintenance or call in your supplier.
Step 1: Weigh according to your system’s manual
Not every weighing system works in the same way. With a hydraulic system such as the RAVAS RCS Plus, the operator lifts the load to the lifting height markers on the mast and then presses the red button. The system then automatically lowers the forks by approximately 15 cm and displays the weight. With weighing forks and other systems, the procedure is different.
Action: find the user manual for your system and summarise the key steps in a brief instruction sheet to be displayed in the cab or before the start of the shift. This ensures that every operator weighs loads in the same way.
Step 2: Weigh with the mast in the upright position
Tilt affects accuracy. With RAVAS RWV-C weighing forks, accuracy decreases by approximately 0.1 per cent per degree from a tilt of 2°. A vertical mast therefore contributes to accurate weighing.
Action: inform operators that the mast must be vertical when weighing. Do not weigh with a forklift that is tilted.
Step 3: Have the system serviced annually
RAVAS recommends annual maintenance of the weighing system. During preventive maintenance, the technician checks, amongst other things:
The inside of the forks;
The cabling and the mounting of the load cells;
The exterior of the electronic components;
The accuracy of the system;
The housing for signs of moisture, and the battery and charger;
Action: include the annual maintenance in your maintenance schedule, for example alongside the forklift’s regular servicing.
Step 4: Have calibrated systems recalibrated at regular intervals
If you use a calibrated system, this must be subject to a periodic metrological inspection (recalibration) in accordance with the NEN standard. This is included as standard in a RAVAS maintenance contract. You will receive:
A signed certificate of approval;
A copy of the certificate for the test weights used;
A calibration sticker and a Verispect sticker.
Following calibration, you will also receive a stamped and signed calibration form and a calibration sticker confirming that the system has been officially calibrated.
Action: check when the next inspection or calibration of your system is due and add it to your schedule.
Step 5: Check the accuracy regularly and have any repairs carried out by trained staff
RAVAS recommends regularly checking the accuracy of the weighing system to prevent incorrect weighings. Please bear in mind that every system has a specified weighing tolerance. For the RAVAS SafeCheck, this is 2 per cent of the capacity. You can find your system’s tolerance in the technical specifications.
Have you noticed regular corrections to weight data, varying readings for the same load or unexplained stock discrepancies? If so, have the system checked. Only trained and authorised personnel may carry out maintenance on the weighing system.
Action: do not attempt to rectify any discrepancies yourself. Make a note of when and where you noticed the discrepancy and report it to your maintenance department or supplier.
