Salmón y vino
En un enorme depósito de Menzies en el aeropuerto de Schiphol, se reciben palets cargados con bultos. La carga en los palets puede ser de cualquier cosa, desde botellas de vino, salmón noruego, partes de máquinas, flores, y en una ocasión hasta una orca viva. Desde Schiphol, estos productos son enviados a países de todo el mundo. Cajas de cartón y cajas de madera están por todas partes, en las formas y dimensiones más extravagantes. Ocho montacargas Toyota con básculas para placas de transporte RAVAS RVL, conducen por el depósito. Las básculas móviles fueron seleccionadas por su robustez: son prácticamente indestructibles. Ramon Maas es Gerente de Manipulación de Mercancías en Menzies Aviation: "Usamos los montacargas día y noche y no se manejan delicadamente". Para recoger cajas grandes o dos bultos a la vez, los montacargas son equipados con horquillas extra largas: 1.600 mm.
Guía aérea
Todos los palets entrantes son pesados durante la descarga y luego son transportados a una zona de contención central en el depósito, donde la mercancía es re-ordenadas en los palets del avión. En una terminal en la cabina de su vehículo, el operador de montacargas ingresa el número de guía aérea del envío. Este ID reúne toda la información sobre el palet en su pantalla. Al levantar el palet, el operador verá inmediatamente si hay una diferencia entre el peso real en las horquillas y el peso declarado en la guía. Los datos sobre el peso se registran con los datos preexistentes sobre el envío y son almacenados en una base de datos que puede ser vista por los transportistas. Con cada transportista se ha firmado un Acuerdo de Nivel de Servicio (SLA, por sus siglas en inglés) único. Este acuerdo establece qué porcentaje del número total de envíos entrantes de los transportistas locales debe ser pesado.

Menzies World Cargo Nederland is part of Menzies Aviation. With a total volume of 430.000 Ton cargo per year, Menzies World Cargo is a major cargo handler at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. At Schiphol, Menzies World Cargo operates fully owned depots, where air freight from local forwarders is built up onto airplane skids.
Airplane molds
Once the pallets have been weighed, they are stacked on airplane skids. The skids are built using molds that show the dimensions of the cargo holds of the particular plane they will be loaded on. There’s a mold for every make and model of plane. Once the skids are built, they are moved to the air site, waiting to be loaded onto the cargoplane.
Supported throughout the organization
In the past, all pallets were weighed on a floor scale. Forklifts waiting in line meant annoyance and exasperation. ‘Positive feedback from the work floor is very important to me’, says Maas. ‘I want to hear the guys say: “This is ideal, because everything goes much faster”. Then a project like this is supported throughout the organization.’ Maas hopes to experience the advantages of mobile weighing: ‘We have now been working with the weighing carriage plates on the forklifts for two months. By working more efficiently we hope to start seeing better returns and results.’

Next to their basic function of material handling equipment, forklifts and warehouse trucks are turning into platforms for generating real-time information on material flows. Materials are identified, weighed, dimensioned, photographed, and all this data is exchanged with WMS or ERP systems via truck terminals and wireless networks. This information, made available to the proper people and software platforms in real time, allows an organization to improve its efficiency and lower its cost. Mobile scales allow integration of weight information where it's most productive: on the lift truck.
