RAVAS Pick by Weight on AS-PL electric warehouse trucks

Reduce order pick errors, shorten order fulfillment time

By Magdalena Futyma

AS-PL Ltd is a Polish manufacturer of starters, alternators and parts. The company offers more than 19,000 different products with a total of almost 280,000 reference numbers in order to provide customers in all kinds of industries with a wide selection of original products and their replacements at competitive prices. Sebastian Wencel, Director of Logistics at AS-PL and closely involved in the ‘redesigning’ of the order picking process of the AS-PL warehouse, shares his experiences.

Why did you decide to invest in Pick by Weight?

“At AS-PL, we are constantly looking for solutions to optimize the course of processes taking place in our warehouse. After carrying out several
analyses and consultations, we found that Pick by Weight perfectly fits our needs to reduce time and prevent order pick errors. We have introduced the solution a few months ago to eliminate errors during picking and shorten the order fulfillment time. After only 2 months since the introduction in February 2020, we see that Pick by Weight has met our requirements and expectations. The main benefits of this RAVAS solution are the reduction of order pick time and the elimination of errors during order picking, which of course fully benefits our customers”.

Toyota trucks LWE140 with RAVAS mobile scales and RDM

From the beginning of the project, the quality of the support provided by RAVAS was at a very high level, according to Sebastian Wencel. “In the first phase, RAVAS presented the solution to us, which was a key factor influencing the decision to introduce the system and cooperation with RAVAS. For example, we did not yet work with electric order pick trucks. We purchased 2 Toyota trucks LWE140 and RAVAS equipped both trucks with a mobile scale. They have the
know-how to retrofit any truck of any brand, regardless of the make or model. RAVAS also suggested the RAVAS Data Manager, a tool that facilitates the easy interface between any ERP or WMS system and the RAVAS truck scales. This way it is much easier to integrate RAVAS truck scales into your logistical operation.
RDM allows you to read a weight from a truck at any desired point in the operation. RDM can be triggered directly from your WMS, or middleware application, such as a voice system. During the work on the implementation of the system, we could count on the support of RAVAS at every step”.

How about quality?

Sebastian Wencel: “While orienting for a suitable solution, we came to the conclusion that RAVAS, for us, represents the best offer in terms of quality and system support. In fact, the quality of the equipment and service were decisive when choosing the supplier of a solution to improve our order pick process. We have been using the system for 2 months now and so far there have been no breakdowns and there was no need to request for support through the website. After the first weeks of work together, I feel that the decision to cooperate with RAVAS was absolutely right”.

How do your operators rate Pick by Weight?

The operators are very positive about both the trucks and the RAVAS Pick by Weight solution. Sebastian Wencel explains: “Of course, we experience significant savings of time, money and in the prevention of errors. But for our operators, the new order picking means that they have to perform less lifting, so they experience better ergonomics during their work”.

His colleague, Warehouse Worker Marcin Gołębiowski adds: “We experience many advantages of using the RAVAS Pick by weight solution. First of all, the messages that appear on the scanners are clear and legible. This greatly facilitates the work and eliminates the possibility of human errors. Another convenience is the very precise weight, thanks to which we have minimized any mistakes that occurred earlier, and we also accelerated the process of packing the pallet”.

Way to work faster

In the old situation, the order picking was a separate process followed by the packaging and final check, both in different locations. When the goods were placed in a cardboard box, the operators performed a check to see if they were picked correctly. After that, the box was being weighed on a floor scale as a final check. In the new situation, a big empty box is placed on the forks of the truck. During the order picking, the goods are being placed in the box. At the end of the process, the box is sealed and packaged. Two steps to be performed at two different locations are being left out of the process. You can imagine the time this saves.

Would you recommend Pick by Weight from RAVAS to other companies?

Sebastian Wencel answers: It all depends on the specifics of a given company. In general, if weight is a crucial source of data, I strongly recommend the Pick by Weight solution. In fact, we are so satisfied that we decided to purchase a third-order pick truck and also equip it with the RAVAS Pick by Weight solution.”

Artur Bubienko, Warehouse Manager at AS-PL, adds: “The most important thing from the company's point of view is to eliminate errors, and therefore the costs that we incur due to complaints or returns. Furthermore, we also managed to save time and effort of warehouse employees. In the new situation, one person is enough to complete a full order, and final checks are unnecessary.”
